Equestrian Statue of Emperor Menelik II
The statue symbolizes the anti-colonial struggle of Emperor Menelik who waged the Battle of Adwa, the climactic battle of the First Italo-Ethiopian War in 1896 and is witnessing Africa’s triumph over European colonialism. It is ordered to be erected by Queen Zewditu, the daughter of Emperor Menelik II, for the memory of her father.
The Statue of the Lion of Judah
The Lion of Judah was erected in the square of Addis Ababa Railway Station portraying the devotion of Emperor Menelik’s to link Ethiopia with the outside world by means of the railway line (with the help of his Swiss advisor, then foreign minister, Engineer Alfred IIg).
Victory Monument /Miazia 27 Monument
This monument is erected to commemorate those Ethiopians who courageously fought and defeat the Italian fascist invaders. It is located at Arat kilo near Ministry of education. Its name represents the victory of Ethiopians over Italians as well as the liberation date of the country (i.e. Miazia or April 27)
‘Tiglachin’ Monument
This monument was erected in the memory of members of the heroic Ethiopian defense forces, who repulsed the aggressive Somali army led by President Siad Bare that invaded Eastern Ethiopia in 1969 E.C with Cuban support.
The Martyr’s /Yekatit 12/ Monument
An attempt on the life of Viceroy Graziani by the two Ethiopians, Abrha Deboch and Moges Asgedom, in February 1937 provoked the Italians to unleash a three-day reign of terror, in the course of which thousands of innocent Ethiopian citizens were killed in cold blood and many of their memory to tell the world and remind Ethiopians of their history.
Statue of His Holiness Abune Petros
The first statue was erected in 1941 and inaugurated by Emperor Haile Selassie in memory of Abune Petros, the archbishop of the Ethiopian Orthodox church who supported the national patriots against the fascist Italian invaders.
National Museum
It served for multiple purposes before its current function as the National Museum. It was built in the 1920’s. It was the residence of Martial Graziani during the Italian occupation.
Addis Ababa Museum
It was the former residence of Ras Birru, an honoured Dejazmatch at Menelik's court. It was built in 1920s. The building is outstanding by the dimension of the complex and its decorations. He was a notable advisor to Menelik II in the early 20th century. Currently it serves as Addis Ababa Museum.
Martyrs’ Museum
This is a monument established in commemoration thousands of young people murdered extrajudicially by the Derge in response to their quest for democracy.
Ethnographic Museum
Genete Leul palace, now the principal university building is one of the early modern palaces which were built in the mid 1930’s and served as a central palace up to 1960.
Kechene Debre Selam Medhane Alem Church
The first church was ordered to be established by Lij Iyasu more than 100 years ago (in 1903) and it was rebuilt to take its present octagonal shape from 1911-1913.
Taeka Negest Beata LeMariam and Debre Menkerat Seel Bet Kidane Meheret Church
The first church with a circular plan was built at the turn of the century covering Emperor Menelik II's tomb, as a mausoleum on his memorial.
Salo St. George Church
It was established in 1883 by the local residents. There are many ancient heritages in this church.
St. Selassie/Holy Trinity Cathedral
Holy Trinity Cathedral is established during the reign of Emperor Menelik II. Emperor Haileselassie ordered the reconstruction of the church to take its present architectural style and laid the cathedral's corner stone in 1931.
Nur Mosque
The original modest building stems from the end of the 19th century and was the first mosque to be built in the new town of AddisAbaba.
The Grand Anwar Mosque
Located in Merkato, the large market district, the modern building serves as a landmark. It was built between 1930 and 1933 by the Italian government.
The parliament
The building was designed by the German architect Mr.Kametz and constructed in time to host the Ethiopian Parliament, which was established in 1931.
Etege Taytu Hotel
Etege Taytu Hotel was the first hotel in the country and accomodated mostly Ethiopian dignitaries, diplomats and foreigners. It was constructed by the order of Empress Taitu in 1907 and designed by Minas Kerbegian.
Arada Old Post Office /Cinema Ethiopia
Modern postal service was introduced in Ethiopia in 1894 E.C during the reign of emperor Menelik II with the help of Alfred Ilg. The Old Post Office was the first modern post ofice opened in Addis Ababa, on July 1908. It functioned until Italian ocupation in 1935.
